A subdomain is a second website with its own unique content, but there is no new domain name. Instead, you use an existing domain name and change the www to another name. The subdomain name looks like forums.domain.com, help.domain.com, help2.domain.com (assuming you already host domain.com).
An addon domain is a second website, with its own unique content. This type of domain does require you to register the new domain name before you can host it. So, if you want to host www.otherdomain.com, this is the solution.
A domain alias is a secondary domain that points to the same website content as your main domain.
Think of it like this:
main-domain.com ➝ Shows website content
alias-domain.com ➝ Shows the *same* website content as main-domain.com
It’s useful if you want:
Multiple domains pointing to the same site
Different domain extensions (e.g., .com
, .net
, .org
)
Branding or marketing URLs that lead to the same page
Go to your Plesk control panel and sign in.
Click “Add Domain Alias” under your main domain.
Domain alias name: e.g., mybrand.net
For the domain: choose the main domain to which the alias should point
You can check options like:
Synchronize DNS zone with the primary domain
Redirect with HTTP 301 (optional for SEO)
Mail service (if you want emails to work on the alias too)
Click OK
Done! The alias now shows the same site as the main domain.
Go to Websites & Domains
Scroll to the alias domain entry
Click the Trash icon or Remove Domain Alias
Confirm deletion
A domain alias does not have its own files or hosting — it’s just a pointer.
If you want the alias to redirect rather than show the same content, check the 301 Redirect option during setup.
